When the topic of human trafficking surfaces, it is automatically thought to be a young female from another country. Unfortunately, this mindset is misleading. Lots of people resemble this young female from another county; men and boys are victims of trafficking and sexual exploitation.
However, females are thought of as the victim, and the men involved are considered the suppliers or the buyer. But, in 2020, according to NCMEC, "boys made up 7% of child sex trafficking victims. Also, 78% of reports regarding online enticement involved girls, and 15% involved boys (in 8% of reports, the gender of the child could not be determined)." (https://fightthenewdrug.org/men-and-boys-who-are-sex-traffickted).
The experts reviels that the numbers of males caught in the triangle of sex trafficking could be much higher because many male victims are unwilling to speak out, silenced by fear and common stereotypes like “men are supposed to be strong.” ((https://fightthenewdrug.org/men-and-boys-who-are-sex-traffickted).
"Similar to how there is no single profile of a trafficker, there’s no single profile of a sex trafficking victim—child or adult, from a foreign country or your native city." (https://www.fightthenewdrug.org).
Hence, many people believe that the trafficking of males is a misnomer. But research reports that the topic of trafficking males is gaining more recognition now than in the past. However, more resources and safe places for male victims and survivors are needed. If you want to help victims, you must know the signs of trafficking on our website. If you think you may be a victim of trafficking or sexual exploitation or suspect someone whom you know, maybe, tell someone.
Accepting and admitting that they are victims of trafficking is difficult for anyone, especially males. But the simplest way to break their silence and get them the support they need is to ask the person. When you ask, be an active listener!
